Just like every other year, the 2017-18 Budget has garnered very polarized reactions from various demographic groups of Bangladesh. It is according to many one of the largest (BDT 4.26 Trillion) and most ambitious attempts to lead Bangladesh towards a GDP of 7.4%, with proposed reforms in various sectors. While Some groups are positively affected by the new budget, where various groups not so much.

This year’s budget has seen decrease in allocation for women in several areas. The 12 ministries where the funds have been reduced include education, health, science and technology, agriculture, disaster management and relief, election commission, information and communication technology, energy and mineral resources, Ministry of Land, and Ministry of Liberation War Affairs.

The most drastic reduction in budget allocation has been made in ICT, Healthcare, Energy and Mineral Resources Division, Liberation War Affairs and Rural Development. It reflects a lack of willingness to take into account the potential for women to make an impact in these fields. Either way, the impact of these allocations are not made clear in the 2017-18 budget. 

The government has been presenting the gender budget since 2009, showcasing their efforts towards women development. Initially the report provided gender budget report on only 4 ministries but now, it is presented across 40 different ministries.
